Chinese Political Science Review - Call for Papers: Poverty Alleviation, Good Governance and Political Effects: A Comparative Perspective

Call for Papers:

Poverty Alleviation, Good Governance and Political Effects: A Comparative Perspective (this opens in a new tab)

Poverty and politics are interrelated in complex ways. On the one hand, improved governance plays a central role in combating poverty. Good governance requires state capability, responsiveness and accountability. It means making government work for the poor. On the other hand, the effectiveness and limitations of different poverty-reduction strategies also generate political consequences. Poverty alleviation efforts have an effect on state governance, political legitimacy and political development. The current scholarship on poverty alleviation has been dominated by economic studies. However, political science can offer insights into poverty alleviation and make theoretical contributions to governance scholarship.

We invite papers that consider the following topics, though not exhaustive, from a comparative perspective with updated evidence:

State capacity and poverty alleviation Institutional design and adaption in poverty alleviation Political dynamics of anti-poverty policy implementationCentral-local government relations in poverty alleviation  Citizen participation in poverty alleviationPolitical implications of poverty alleviation

Although papers will be published in journals with “Chinese” in titles, this is not a call for papers on China/Chinese politics, but on the topics and issues specified above. As such, there is no need for papers to have a specific Chinese dimension or focus. If China happened to be an issue, it should be dealt with in a comparative context. However, papers must be theory-driven, not issue-oriented or policy oriented.
