About this book series
The science of producing and measuring high and ultrahigh vacuum environments has fundamental interest for basic research in addition to a wide variety of important practical applications. Basic research involving particle physics, atomic and molecular physics, plasma physics, physical chemistry, and surface science often involves careful production, control, and measurement of a vacuum environment in order to perform experiments. Practical applications of vacuum science and technology are found in many materials processing techniques used for microelectronic, photonic, and magnetic materials and in the simulation of space and rarefied gas environments.
As in most of modern science, the rapid development of the field has been accompanied by a parallel growth in the related technical literature including specialized journals, monographs, and textbooks. There exist early publications in vacuum science and technology which have attained the status of indispensable references among practitioners, lecturers, and students in the field. Many of these "classic" publications have gone out of print and are currently unavailable to newcomers in the field.
The American Vacuum Society Classics reprints important books from the last four decades that continue to have significant impact on the modern development of the field. It is the goal of the American Vacuum Society Classics to reprint these books in a high quality and affordable format to ensure wide availability to t
he technical community, individual researchers, and students.Book titles in this series
