About this book series

Education is a cultural practice, without which neither the individual life course nor the reproduction of society can be adequately grasped. Philosophy and theory of education is its own form of research into empirical reality. Our approach to the world is permeated with presuppositions, and in some cases prejudices. How we can empirically comprehend education as cultural practice in a philosophical sense is the leitmotif of the series Palgrave Studies in Educational Philosophy and Theory. The shared assumption of the books published in this series is that education must be understood as a social phenomenon that is visible in almost every aspect of daily life. Education as a cultural practice is understood as a phenomenon with its own specific structure and logic. The studies presented in the series are situated in the tradition of a critical approach to educational settings. They are inspired by the ideas from the Enlightenment(s), various forms of critical theory and its meta-criticism by postmodern thinkers. They are oriented toward a philosophical perspective on empirical reality that incorporates the historical lineages, cultural patterns, and belief systems of education. Philosophy and theory of education is only possible today with the inclusion of topics such as human rights, human dignity, sustainability, digitalization, decolonisation and transnational interdependencies. The series offers a framework to realistically comprehend education in an international and transnational horizon with the inclusion of underlying cultural patterns.
