This thematic issue aims to showcase recent advancements in microbial and enzymatic approaches for biomass conversion, covering a wide spectrum of topics related to insights, mechanisms, and sustainability considerations. Researchers, scientists, engineers, and experts are invited to contribute to this special issue and share their findings, innovations, and perspectives. This includes the following aspects.
- Provide comprehensive insights into the microbial and enzymatic diversity utilized in biomass conversion.
- Assess the efficiency and specificity of microbial and enzymatic processes in biomass degradation.
- Evaluate the impact of genetic engineering and synthetic biology on enhancing biomass conversion efficiency.
- Explore emerging technologies and techniques in microbial and enzymatic bio-refinery systems.
- Address the challenges, limitations, and potential solutions for scaling up microbial and enzymatic biomass conversion processes.

The focus of this thematic issue is on original research papers with novel findings and new results meetings the highest scientific standards in the research field outlined above. Review papers are typically rejected. They are only exceptionally accepted if they are tackling a clearly new question and / or providing new and in-depth insights into a specific topic.
