Scheckübergabe der Spendeneinnahmen Nikolausmarkt 2016 © SpringerThe St Nicholas Market held at Springer Nature’s publishing house in Heidelberg once again raised an impressive sum for a good cause in December. With the help of the Management Board, Springer’s committed staff raised a total of 26,000 euros. This year, the money is being divided equally between two social projects in the region again. Asyl Café, a drop-in center for refugees in Mannheim, and the cooking group of the Ökumenische Fördergemeinschaft Ludwigshafen, Ludwigshafen’s ecumenical support association, will each receive 13,000 euros to fund their projects.

‘It is a delight to see our staff in Heidelberg supporting good causes in the region every year. Their efforts have become a real tradition and mean that two fantastic social projects can be supported this year again too. The Management Board is honoring their efforts by doubling the proceeds, as it does every year,’ Birgit Kolb, Human Resources Director Springer Heidelberg, explained.

For more than 25 years now, the money raised through the annual St Nicholas Market held at the publishing house in Heidelberg has been used to support charitable associations and initiatives in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region.

The Asyl Café was set up more than 25 years ago and is Mannheim’s oldest independent drop-in center for refugees run by volunteers. A team of qualified social workers and education staff supports and assists refugees in Mannheim, helping them to become integrated into society, gain an education, start work, and apply for asylum.

The counseling services and youth support facilities run by the Ökumenische Fördergemeinschaft Ludwigshafen are designed to improve living conditions in homeless and deprived areas. Working with those affected, they aim to help people escape homelessness. The cooking group in Ludwigshafen organizes the preparation of a hot meal several times a week with homeless people.
