“Dr Koliastasis’ book makes an important contribution to the study of the political campaign means and skills essential for premiership. The case of permanent campaign indeed has become the canon for political leaders across the world. This is due to various factors, ranging from new means of political communication, such as 24/7 news coverage and the advent of social media that allow real-time interaction, to the de-alignment of voters from mainstream parties. It is a common sense that heads of governments find it very challenging to secure support for the reforms they are struggling to pursue, while they are confronted with high pressure from the electorates for even more efficient and immediate solutions to a wide-ranging set of problems and concerns. Hence, studying the way political campaigns may uphold the functioning of governments, and maintain political support, is a matter of concern for all those who conceive of politics as a profession in Weberian terms. Moreover, there is another useful contribution by Dr Kolliastasis’ focus on three Greek premiers – A. Samaras, A.Tsipras, K.Mitsotakis. Since 2009 Greek politics attracted great publicity in international media as much as in academic debates over the economic crisis and its grave effects for the prosperity and sustainability of the state. In that context, the dramatic and unprecedented for the European standards decrease of trust in political institutions, as made evident in the turmoil of these years, and especially the restructuring of the party systems, the rise of anti-systemic parties and polarization, and government instability, created sui generis political circumstances for managing state affairs. Hence, studying the ways premiers coming from opposite ideological backgrounds tried to cope with voters’ critical stance and changing voting preferences highlights some of the very interesting topics of contemporary Political Science research on political communication and party politics. The analysis is very coherent and systematic, and brings up many critical points that become relevant to the bibliography beyond the case of Greek politics.”
—Manos Papazoglou, Assistant Professor in Political Systems, Department of Politics and International Relations, University of the Peloponnese, Greece“A very welcome and much needed book that explores theories and applications of permanent campaigning. This book offers a perceptive examination of how permanent campaigning was employed by three Greek Prime Ministers during the last decade, and as such offers insights beyond the widely researched cases of the US and northern Europe.”
