About this book

This book deals with the organic chemistry of polymers which find tech nological use as adhesives, fibres, paints, plastics and rubbers. For the most part, only polymers which are of commercial significance are considered and the primary aim of the book is to relate theoretical aspects to industrial practice. The book is mainly intended for use by students in technical institutions and universities who are specializing in polymer science and by graduates who require an introduction to this field. There are available several books dealing with the physical chemistry of polymers but the organic chemistry of polymers has not received so much attention. In recognition of this situation and because the two aspects of polymer chemistry are often taught separately, this book deals specifically with organic chemistry and topics of physical chemistry have been omitted. Also, in this way the book has been kept to a reasonable size. This is not to say that integration of the two areas of polymer science is undesirable; on the contrary, it is important that the inter-relationship should be appreciated. I was gratified by the favourable comments prompted by the first edition of the book and I have therefore retained the same organization in this second edition. Nevertheless, the book has been extensively revised to reflect the developments which have taken place.

Reviews

...The discussion of the manufacture and use of each type of polymer is broadly descriptive and more or less on the level of an introductory survey. Hence the contents of this book are essentially encyclopaedic in nature; that makes it a fine reference volume for general information on the production and applications of industrial polymers. Polymer News; This second edition of Organic Polymer Chemistry, published 15 years after the original, continues to provide a valuable link between theoretical aspects and industrial practice... World Surface Coatings Abstracts; This book is a rigorous and readable study of industrially important polymers,... a welcome counterpart to books on polymer chemistry...The aim is to relate the theoretical concepts of organic chemistry to industrial practice, this aim is comprehensively and admirably achieved...This book is strongly recommended to those who wish to obtain or update their knowledge... Journal of Coatings Technology; ... I have no doubt that adhesive and sealant technologists will discover in this book a wealth of useful information that will be of great help in their understanding of the important polymer systems used in our industry. Adhesives Age; .. gives an introduction to the organic chemistry of polymers and surveys a variety of them with a focus on those of industrial importance. American Paint and Coatings
