About this book

Stable Isotope Geochemistry is an introduction to the use of stable isotopes in the fields of geoscience. It is subdivided into three parts: - theoretical and experimental principles;
- fractionation mechanisms of light elements;
- the natural variations of geologically important reservoirs.
In this updated 4th edition many of the chapters have been expanded, especially those on techniques and environmental aspects. The main focus is on recent results and new developments. For students and scientists alike the book will be a primary reference with regard to how and where stable isotopes can be used to solve geological problems.

Reviews

From the reviews of the fifth edition:

"This book forms an introduction to the wide range of applications of stable isotopes in geosciences. It is subdivided into … . The book forms a primary source of information with regard to how and where stable isotopes can be used to solve geological problems. This admirable overview presents an enormous … . The book is fluently written and easy to read. It certainly deserves its place in all scientific libraries and on the book shelf of numerous earth scientists … ." (Philippe Muchez, Geologica Belgica, Vol. 8(1-2), 2005)

"This fifth edition of Stable Isotope Geochemistry provides an excellent contemporary overview of numerous aspects of the use of stable isotopes in earth sciences. ... this book is well written, systematically structured, and contains both much useful and easily accessible information. … serves as an excellent up-to-date literature resource for the entire field of stable isotope research. … a book suitable for the vast majority of the isotope community, ranging from undergraduate students … to experienced researchers wishing to refresh their knowledge about recent developments." (Kay Knoeller, Isotopes in Environmental and Health Studies, Vol. 41 (2), June, 2005)

"Stable Isotope Geochemistry is … an introduction to the use of stable isotopes in the earth sciences. … contains 78 figures and 18 tables; they are valuable, complement the text, and facilitate understanding. The 43 pages of references serve as an excellent resource for the entire area of stable isotope geochemistry. ... a classical but state-of-the-art authoritative book, systematically structured, concisely written and full of much useful information. I highly recommend it to advanced undergraduate and graduate students and to researchers … ." (Xiqiu Han, Journal of Sedimentary Research, September, 2004)

"In its fifth edition, this is an exquisite, no-nonsense, very clearly writtenprimer on stable isotope geochemistry. … Not only is this a very good textbook and primer, it is a superb reference book on stable isotope geochemistry. … Hoefs’ textbook can be fully recommended to sit on the desk of any geochemist or geoscientist (student and experienced colleague alike) dealing with stable isotopes." (Jörg Matschullat, Environmental Geology, Vol. 49, 2006)

"Professor Hoefs defines stable isotopes as atoms whose nuclei contain the same number of protons, but a different number of neutrons. … This book contains an exceptional list of literature references for additional study on specific topics. Hoefs’ book is a very valuable reference for individuals and companies engaged in isotopic studies and is very reasonably priced." (Robert F. Ehinger, American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Vol. 89 (1), January, 2005)
