About this book

This concise guide takes a practical approach to adolescent and young adult (AYA) rheumatology, aiming to cover the needs of any healthcare professional dealing with young people aged 10-24 years. Each chapter contains key management points for readers to readily access disease-specific management as well as highlighting specific AYA issues which differ from pediatric and adult practice.

The coverage is comprehensive but concise and designed to act as a primary reference tool for subjects across the field of rheumatology.

The book is designed for pediatric/adult rheumatologists, primary care physicians, nurses, allied health professionals and other professionals to understand each topic covered and to take a practical approach to delivering developmentally appropriate rheumatology health care.

Dr McDonagh originally trained in adult rheumatology in Newcastle and London and then moved into pediatric rheumatology (London, Birmingham, Manchester) where she has since developed her clinical and research interests in adolescent health and transitional care. She has a particular interest in models of care for young people with chronic health conditions that support young people’s emerging capacity for self-management, peer support and their vocational development. She is deputy chair of the Barbara Ansell National Network for Adolescent Rheumatology and faculty member of the European Teaching Effective Adolescent Care and Health initiative.

Dr Tattersall trained in both adult and paediatric rheumatology in Sheffield and Nottingham and was appointed as a consultant in Adolescent Rheumatology in Sheffield in 2008. She has built, with her colleagues, a seamless and multidisciplinary rheumatology service for 10-24 year olds across paediatric andadult services. She has a particular interest in the long terms effects and treatment of childhood-onset arthritis in adults, empowering young people, families and professionals in healthcare services and the involvement of young people in rheumatology. She is chair of the Barbara Ansell National Network for Adolescent Rheumatology and a member of the Royal College of Physicians Young Adult and Adolescent strategy group.
