About this book

This book discusses the latest advances and applications in geospatial technologies and earth resources for mine surveying and civil engineering. It also discusses mineral resources management and assesses many techniques such as unmanned aerial vehicles/drones, ground-penetrating radar, geographic information system (GIS) and GIS-based machine learning. The book gathers the proceedings of the International Conference on Geo-Spatial Technologies and Earth Resources (GTER 2017), which was co-organized by the Hanoi University of Mining and Geology (HUMG) and the International Society for Mine Surveying (ISM) and held in Hanoi, Vietnam, on October 5–6, 2017. GTER 2017 is technically co-sponsored by the Vietnam Mining Science and Technology Association (VMST), Vietnam Association of Geodesy, Cartography and Remote Sensing (VGCR), Vietnam National Coal-Mineral Industries Holding Corporation Limited (VINACOMIN), and the Dong Bac Corporation (NECO). The event is intended to bring together experts, researchers, engineers, and policymakers to discuss and exchange their knowledges and experiences with modern geospatial technologies, recent advances in mining and tunneling, and the geological and earth sciences. Given its breadth of coverage, the book will appeal to scientists in the field as well as professionals interested in related technological applications.

About the authors

Dieu Tien Bui is currently an Associate Professor at the GIS and IT group, Department of Business and IT, University College of Southeast Norway, Bø i Telemark, Norway. An editor for several scientific journals, he received his M.Sc. degree in Cartographic Engineering from Hanoi University of Mining and Geology, Hanoi, Vietnam, in 2004, and his Ph.D. in Geomatics from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Aas, Norway, in 2013. He was a postdoctoral researcher at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences from 2013 to 2014. From 2004 to 2007, he was a university lecturer at the Faculty of Surveying and Mapping, Hanoi University of Mining and Geology. In 2008, he was a geospatial analyst at Ugland IT Group, a geographic information services company in Lysaker, Oslo, Norway. He has more than 80 publications to his credit, including 40 articles published in Science Citation Index (SCI/SCIE) scientific journals, five book chapters published by Springer, and two book chapters published by Elsevier. His research interests include GIS, remote sensing, and artificial intelligence and machine learning for natural hazards and environmental problems such as landslides, floods and forest fires, ground biomass, and structural displacement. Anh Ngoc Do is Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Deputy Head of the Department of Underground and Mining Construction, Hanoi University of Mining and Geology, Hanoi, Vietnam. He received his M.Sc. degree in Tunneling from Hanoi University of Mining and Geology (HUMG), Hanoi, Vietnam, in 2006, and his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from INSA de Lyon, France, in 2014. Currently, he is head of the Tunneling and Underground Space research group at HUMG. A reviewer for several scientific journals, he has published more than 18 articles in Science Citation Index (SCI/SCIE) technical journals and one book chapter. His research interests include tunneling, underground construction, earthquake engineering, and numerical analysis. Hoang-Bac Bui is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Exploration Geology, Faculty of Sciences and Geoengineering, Hanoi University of Mining and Geology, Vietnam, where he has been working since 2000. He received his B.S. degree in Geology from Hanoi University of Mining and Geology, Vietnam, in 1999, his M.Sc. degree in Civil Engineering from Paichai University, South Korea, in 2004, and his Ph.D. in Geological Science (Nano minerals) from Yonsei University, South Korea, in 2009. He has published more than 40 research papers, 12 of which appeared in Science Citation Index (SCI/SCIE) journals. His research interests include GIS for mineral exploration, clay minerals, mineral chemistry and solid waste recycling. Nhat Duc Hoang is currently a Lecturer at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Duy Tan University, Danang city, Vietnam. He is the Director of Construction, Mechanics, and Materials at the Institute of Research and Development, Duy Tan University. He received his M.Sc. degree in 2010 and his Ph.D. degree in 2013, both from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST). From 2008 to 2013, he was a research assistant at NTUST’s CIC lab, Construction Engineering department. He has published 31 articles in Science Citation Index (SCI/SCIE) technical journals and two book chapters.  His research interests include GIS-based spatial modeling of natural hazards, engineering applications of artificial intelligence, hybrid machine learning models, and metaheuristic optimization.
