About this book

This book integrates bioengineering for solving health issues. It shows how the use of applied mechanics and strength of materials using 3D printing models, digital correlation techniques and computed tomography images, provides solutions to biology, medicine and mechanical engineering. The book provides clear processes and illustrations, several worked examples, and many projects. It helps scientists to analyze different modes of applying mechanical and biomedical concepts, physical principles to develop devices, sensors, prosthesis, orthotic systems, new materials and techniques that may improve the health system. It can be used in courses such as biomechanics and orthopedics, rehabilitation and mechanical engineering, also in rehabilitation or sports medicine.

About the editors

Andreas Öchsner is a Full Professor of Lightweight Design and Structural Simulation at Esslingen University of Applied Sciences, Germany. Having obtained a Dipl.-Ing. degree in Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Stuttgart (1997), Germany, he served as a research and teaching assistant at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg from 1997 to 2003, while working to complete his Doctor of Engineering Sciences (Dr.-Ing.) degree. From 2003 to 2006, he was an Assistant Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Head of the Cellular Metals Group affiliated with the University of Aveiro, Portugal. He spent seven years (2007–2013) as a Full Professor at the Department of Applied Mechanics, Technical University of Malaysia, where he was also Head of the Advanced Materials and Structure Lab. From 2014 to 2017, he was a Full Professor at the School of Engineering, Griffith University, Australia, and Leader of the Mechanical Engineering Program (Head of Discipline and Program Director).

Dr. Juan Alfonso Beltrán Fernández, is a graduate of the Escuela Superior de Ingeniería Mecánica y Eléctrica, ESIME of the National Polytechnic Institute in 1999 and researcher, who is currently part of the National System of Researchers. He has introduced important achievements in the health sector, with the specialist surgerist of the Hospital ISSSTE, IMSS, Hospital Humberto Díaz Lombardo, the Center for Research and Laboratory of Biomechanics (CILAB), considering areas of the spine, reconstructive or aesthetic maxillofacial surgery and recently in cranioplasties with specific grafts of specific areas with trauma. In particular, it highlights the work of counseling, consulting, traditional manufacturing, computerized and additive (3D), design and adaptation with composite and biocompatible materials in patients with terminal cancer and trauma and consulting work for the private sector. He received in 2010 the award: ENGINEERING AWARD 2010 - ICYTDF in the category of TESIS WORK OR TERMINAL PROJECT WHOSE CONTRIBUTION TO ENGINEERING IS BENEFIT OF THE CITY OR COUNTRY, for its contributions to the development of research and engineering applied for the benefit of society, in particular with relevance in Biomechanics and prosthetics suitable to the Mexican phenotype.
