About this book

This book focuses on the mineral deposits from the mining complex of Kazakhstan, including copper ores from the Nikolayevsky and Shemonaikhinsky open-pit quarries, and from the Kazchrome and Konyrat mines in Balkhash.

This study assesses the geomechanical conditions of the rock massive, as well as strengthening and reinforcing processes. It develops methods for their assessment and provides detailed instructions on applying the methods. The book also summarizes the latest research and developments in formulating cement solutions to reinforce slopes and suppress dust on the roads of the quarry. The book’s overarching goal is to promote geological and mining engineering conditions that ensure the ecologically safe development of the mineral resource fields.

Given its scope, the book will be of interest to mining engineers, researchers, and students in a broad range of geomechanical, geodesic, mining and environmental fields.

About the authors

Khaini-Kamal Kasymkhanova is a Professor and head of the Department of Cartography and Geoinformatics at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mining Surveying from the Satpayev Kazakh National Technical University (formerly the Polytechnic Institute. V. I. Lenin). In 2009, she was received her Doctor of Technical Sciences degree from Karagandy State Technical University. From 1981 to 1997 she worked as a mining engineer surveyor at Balkhash Mining and Metallurgical Combine; and from 2002 to 2012 she was assistant, senior lecturer, Associate Professor and head of department at the Satpayev Kazakh National Technical University.

Her research interests include problems related to geodesy, cartography, surveying, geomechanics, geophysics, geoinformatics and geology.

Gulnar Jangulova is a Doctor of Technical Sciences and an Associated Professor at the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mining Surveying from Satpayev Kazakh National Technical University (formerly the Polytechnic Institute. V. I. Lenin). She has held various positions, including leading engineer at the Laboratory of Mining Pressure at the D. A. Kunaev Institute of Mining and researcher at the Laboratory of Mountain Pressure at the same institute. From 1986 to 1994 she was a mountain engineer  mine surveyor at IPK «Irtysh», and from 2001 to 2012 senior researcher at the Institute of Mining.

Her research interests include problems of geodesy, cartography, surveying, geomechanics, geophysics, geoinformatics and geology.

Gulnura Issanova holds a doctorate degree in Natural Sciences and is an Associate Professor at the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, scientist and researcher at U.U. Uspanov Kazakh Research Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry and a scientific secretary at the Research Centre of Ecology and Environment of Central Asia, Almaty, Kazakhstan.

She holds a B.Sc an M.Sc. in Physical Geography from the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, and completed her doctoral degree at the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences. She completed a postdoc under the CAS President’s (Bai Chunli) International Fellowship Initiative (PIFI) for 2017 at the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China and currently pursuing a postdoc at the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. She is a holder of the Foreign Expert Certificate of the People’s Republic of China. Her research interests focus on problems of soil degradation and desertification, and during her Ph.D. she investigated the role of dust and sand storms in the processes of land and soil degradation and desertification.

Venera Turekhanova graduated from the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in Mechanics for her bachelor’s (B.Sc.) and master’s (M.Sc.) degrees.
