About this book

This book provides a comprehensive overview on the theories, processes, and solutions relevant to effectively creating, using, and managing digital media in a variety of instructional settings. In the first section of the book, the authors provide an overview of the theories, development models, and principles of learning with digital media. In the second section, the authors detail various digital media solutions, including: Instructional Videos, Instructional Simulations and Games, Online Learning, Mobile Learning, and Emerging Learning Technologies. Overall, this book emphasizes the theoretical principles for learning with digital media and processes to design digital media solutions in various instructional settings. The readers are also provided with multiple case studies from real world projects in various instructional settings.

About the authors

Florence Martin is a Professor in the Learning, Design and Technology program at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. She received her Doctorate and Master's in Educational Technology from Arizona State University, and has a  Bachelor's degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Bharathiyar University, India. She has worked on instructional design projects for Shooolini University, Viridis Learning, Maricopa Community College, University of Phoenix, Intel, Cisco Learning Institute, and Arizona State University. She was the first-place winner of the Crystal Award from the Division of Distance Learning in Association of Educational Communications and Technology in 2015 which is given to innovative and outstanding multimedia-based distance learning courses. Dr. Martin engages in research focusing on the effective design of instruction and integration of digital technology to improve learning and performance. Her research has resulted in over 50 publications and 100 presentations and she has published in several leading educational technology journals.  Dr. Martin was a former President of the Multimedia Production Division and Division of Distance Learning at Association for Educational communications and Technology and is a Director-at-Large for International Board of Standards for Training, Performance and Instruction.

Anthony Betrus is a Professor of Educational Technology and Management at the State University of New York at Potsdam. He received PhD in Instructional Systems Technology from Indiana University, Bloomington, and has a Bachelor’s degree in Math Education and a Master’s Degree in Instructional Technology and Media Management from SUNY Potsdam. His research has focussed on the effective uses of technology in teaching and learning settings, especially in the motivational qualities of simulations & games and emerging learning technologies. He is a former President of the Emerging Learning Technologies division of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT), co-developer of a digital literacy course for middle school students, and designer of several educational games. He is also the Esports director at SUNY Potsdam, where he focusses on training students to use digital media to prepare them for future STEM careers.
