About this Textbook

The second, revised edition of the successful textbook describes the branch of astrophysics in which processes in the universe are investigated with experimental methods known from cosmic ray and particle physics experiments. The new edition now covers the progress in recent discoveries in gravitational waves, neutrino astronomy and astrobiology. After a historical introduction to the basics of elementary particles, their interactions and the relevant detection techniques are described. The main body of the book concerns cosmic rays, astrophysics and cosmology. The modern aspects of astroparticle physics are described in chapters on the physics of the early universe. The book provides an orientation in the field of astroparticle physics that many beginners might look for. The physics issues are presented with little mathematics, and the results are illustrated by many diagrams and many illustrative scientific cartoons which ease the reading of the book. The reader has a chance to enter this field of astrophysics with a book that closes the gap between expert and popular level. This book is highly recommended for undergraduate students in physics or astronomy. It also includes an extensive glossary and a detailed index.

This new edition has been thoroughly updated and presents new chapters on gravitational waves and neutrino astronomy, including all details to understand recent discoveries in multi-messeneger experiments. New chapters give a clear introduction to the rapidly growing fields of neutrino astronomy and a short outlook on astrobiology. The book also presents new sections exploring the interface between particle physics and cosmic radiation and illustrates the impact of particle physics discoveries to astroparticle physics.

About the authors

Prof. Dr. Claus Grupen has studied physics in Kiel and has been visiting scientist and professor at the Universities of Durham, UK and of Tokyo, Japan. He has more than 35 years of teaching experience at Siegen University (physics and astrophysics). He has a long research history at CERN, there he focused on electron-positron physics with the ALEPH-experiment. In addition he is involved in the Cosmolep at CERN, studying cosmic rays. Prof. Grupen is fellow of the Royal Society of England and senior fellow of the Helmholtz Alliance for astroparticle physics.
