About this book

It is 20 years since the publication of the ? rst edition of Fetal and Neonatal Pathology. Perinatal pathology and its related clinical specialties have seen many changes during that time. Within the practice of pathology, there have been many advances of different levels of importance to our specialty. C- rently, the investigation of the molecular basis of normal development and of disease has changed our concepts of both and, at a more practical level, has supplied us with the tools to achieve more precise answers in individual cases. Aspects of perinatal pathology that have bene? ted particularly from this technology are tumors, skeletal dysplasias, muscular dystrophies, and renal cystic disease, where the effects have extended far beyond the purely diagnostic. Molecular pathology has resulted in new insights into devel- mental anomalies, as well as new tests for families at risk. The overall format of the fourth edition remains unchanged from the third edition, with chapters in the ? rst half of the book addressing more general problem areas in perinatal pathology, followed by system-based chapters covering speci? c pathological abnormalities. In this fourth edition, editorial responsibility has been shared by Drs. Keeling and Khong, as they have interests that are complementary. A new editor brings new ideas and contacts. There have been changes in authorship of a number of chapters, re? ecting the changing interests of individuals as well as the passage of time.

Reviews

From the reviews of the third edition:

"The third edition of Jean Keeling's Fetal and Neonatal Pathology is a very good book. It should be available in any histopathology department in which perinatal post-mortems are carried out.... ...this is a very good book, not only for trainees but also as a first port of call for the specialist perinatal pathologist. The up-dated reference lists are an excellent source of more information - and the third edition is a great improvement on an already very good book." Scheimberg, Virchows Archiv

The publication of a third edition of any textbook is testament to its success. This is particularly true for Fetal and Neonatal Pathology. The editor, Dr Keeling, is regarded as a leading practitioner and teacher of this rare and precious profession. Thanks to the great success of the previous editions, this book already has its place amongst the classic references in fetal and perinatal pathology. It represents essential literature for all morbid anatomists and histopathologists involved in routine perinatal post mortems, and serves as a fundamental source of information for junior pathologists interested in perinatal pathology, obstetricians, neonatologists and paediatricians. ... The overall professional and educational value of the Fetal and Neonatal Pathology is likely to be an important contributory factor in persuading young pathologists to choose fetal and neonatal pathology as their life-long career opportunity. This is an urgent and crucial goal for this profession in an era beleaguered by exhausting enquiries.’ AcpNews 2002; p54.

‘This book remains an important part of any foetal pathology library, as it gives much of the basis for the practice of this specialty. …The text is extremely readable and provides a logical overview of each topic. It concentrates on more important facts and general principles and gives a good perspective on many aspects of this field. In many ways,it provides a sound basis for the practice of foetal and neonatal pathology.’ Pathology 2002; 385.

‘The strongest feature of the book is the systematic approach it advocates. If there is a preliminary discussion between the pathologist and clinicians about the diagnosis and problems during life, if the geneticist has a chance to assess the syndromal features, if the standard photos and X-rays are taken where appropriate, if material is kept for ancillary investigations including microbiology, biochemistry, cytogenetics and molecular studies, if the appropriate measurements and careful dissections are made, if the placenta is examined and if the literature is reviewed, then there is good chance that a diagnosis can be made eventually allowing useful information, including negative findings, to be provided to clinicians and parents. The third edition of Fetal and Neonatal Pathology is a most valuable companion for both experienced perinatal pathologists and those who only occasionally have to perform prenatal autopsies, such as registrars and generally trained anatomical pathologists.’ Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health 2002: 38(3); 325.

From the reviews of the fourth edition:

"This is the fourth edition of a complete reference for perinatal pathology. … Although it is primarily for pathologists, the book also is a valuable reference for obstetricians, neonatologists, and pediatricians. The two editors, Drs. Keeling and Khong, and the numerous contributing authors are specialists in pathology, obstetrics, and perinatology. … This is a complete reference for those in the field of fetal and neonatal pathology." (Maura F. O’Neil, Doody’s Review Service, February, 2008)
