The investigation of cosmic phenomena is one of mankind’s oldest adventures and at the same time one of the areas where we are presently witnessing the most astounding expansion of knowledge in the natural sciences. The rapid growth of experimental evidence due to, e.g., modern computer technology, satellite-borne observatories and high-tech instrumentation even tends to accelerate this.
