About this book series

The publication of the Encyclopedia of Language and Education signals the maturity of the field of `language and education' as an international and interdisciplinary field of significance and cohesion. Each of the eight volumes of the Encyclopedia deals with a single substantial subject in the language and education field. In designing the volumes, the editors have tried to recognize the diversity of the field in their selection of contributors and their choice of topics. The contributors come from every continent and from more than 40 countries. Their reviews discuss language and education issues affecting every country in the world. The interdisciplinary nature of the Encyclopedia is further reflected in the relationship between volume titles and the major academic interests of their editors. A shared interest of all editors is of course the practice and theory of education itself.
Each volume of the Encyclopedia of Language and Education deals with a single, substantial topic in the language and education field. Each volume includes more than 20 state-of-the-art topical reviews of the literature in a particular area. These reviews attempt a complete coverage of the subject of the volume and are written by one or more experts in the topic. Each review tries to anticipate and answer some of the more commonly asked questions about language and education. Taken together, the eight volumes of this Encyclopedia provide answers to more than 200 major questions and hundreds of subsidiary questions. The aim of all reviews, and that of the Encyclopedia as a whole, is to give readers access to the international literature and research on each topic. Each volume has its own name and subject indexes, with an accumulative index in Volume 8, and includes the contents of all other volumes.
The Encyclopedia has been planned as a necessary reference set for any university or college library that serves a faculty or school of education. Libraries serving academic departments in any of the language disciplines, especially applied linguistics would also find this a valuable resource.
