About this book series

Humanitarian action and emergency management are two distinct, though deeply interrelated social systems where those concerned with the well-being of others converge. They have been of great interest to scholars and have increasingly become the subject of introspection by practitioners as well. Still, many aspects of their practice are rarely studied and only vaguely understood.

One of the most significant challenges in understanding their nature is the diversity of their essential parts: the humanitarian worker and the emergency practitioner. The voices of the people doing the work, we believe, are critical in working out how to articulate what constitutes them. The vast majority of existing literature, however, is imbued with the point of view of the scholars that produced it. Furthermore, they discuss what each author considers necessary for the world to know.

With this series, we want to give expert practitioners a chance to speak for themselves and present their divergent opinions without neglecting the expertise of scholars who dedicate their lives to systematically and rigorously creating knowledge. To do so, it benefits from a mixed editorial board of highly renowned practitioners and scholars. Experts from both worlds work together, from the conception of an idea to the publication of each book.

We want to help the public learn how those involved in assisting others practice their craft and experience their life within this unique space dedicated to meeting human needs. To do so, it covers a wide variety of topics and encourages the submission of proposals from all fields of study. It also welcomes proposals from leaders who might not be directly involved in either discipline but have a vested interest and substantial knowledge in either area, such as corporate executives, religious leaders, public officials, and community representatives.

The series accepts both solicited and unsolicited proposals to publish edited volumes and authored monographs.
