About the Editor

Epidemiologist and counsellor, Maria Giulia Marini has more than 30 years of professional life in health care. She has a classic humanistic background, including the study of Latin and ancient Greek, followed by scientific academic studies, chemistry and pharmacology. She worked in medical research, moved to health care organization, getting academic specialization in Epidemiology. Later, she became active in consultancy and health care education, acting as a Counsellor with transactional analysis orientation. Currently, she is the director of the  Innovation in Health Care Area of Fondazione ISTUD, an independent not for profit Italian Business School with a humanistic approach,  acknowledged by the Italian Ministry of Research. Active member of the board of Italian Society of Narrative Medicine, tenured professor of Narrative Medicine at La Sapienza, and referee for World Health Organization for “Narrative Method in Public Health”, Since January 2020 she is President of EUNAMES- European Narrative Medicine Society.She published the following books with Springer:  “Narrative medicine: Bridging the gap between Evidence Based care and Medical Humanities ” and  “The Languages of care in narrative medicine: words, space and sounds in the healthcare ecosystem” both published with Springer. Since January 2020, President of EUNAMES- European Narrative Medicine Society.


Jonathan McFarland currently works as Associate Professor in the  Faculty of Medicine at Universidad Autonoma de Madrid and as Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Linguistics, I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University.  With a background in the Humanities - more than 20 years been working in the field of Medical English, he is a member of AMEE ( Association Medical Education Europe ), as well as being a member of the Moscow Office Committee, and ASME ( Association for the Study of Medical Education). He is also a Committee member of EUNAMES ( European Narrative Medicine Society) and has just made a member of ASOMEGA ( Association of Galician Doctors). He is the lay member for COMETA ( Ethics Committee for Primary Health Care for Mallorca)
He is the President of The Doctor as a Humanist, which is an International organization of students, scholars, educators and practitioners dedicated to the study, preservation and promotion of the humanities and humanism in medicine and healthcare around the world.
