About the Editor

Federico Coccolini  is a consultant general, emergency and trauma surgeon working at the Pisa University Hospital (Pisa, Italy), one of the biggest Level I trauma centres in Italy. He teaches Emergency and Trauma Surgery at the University of Pisa. He has a deep experience in managing post-traumatic and non-post-traumatic patients. His principal interests are emergency surgery, trauma surgery, advanced oncology, oncologic gastrointestinal surgery, laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery, tissue engineering and experimental surgery, evidence-based medicine and surgery. He is the principal investigator of multicentre studies and registers, and authored hundreds of papers and tens of book chapters. He edited several books and a book series. He served as reviewer for several journals and currently  is the research editor of the World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES) and of the World Journal of Emergency Surgery (WJES), member of the Executive Committee of the Italian Society of Geriatric Surgery and of the Italian Society of Surgical Physiopathology. Dr Coccolini is a world opinion leader in emergency general surgery and trauma.

Raul Coimbra is an internationally recognized trauma surgeon who specializes in surgical critical care and emergency general surgery. He  is the Surgeon in Chief of the Riverside University Health System Medical Center, Professor of Surgery at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, and Emeritus Professor University of California San Diego. His participation in global health and international outreach is enormous. Dr. Coimbra is President of the Board of Directors for the World Coalition for Trauma Care, as well as a member of the Global Alliance for the Care of the Injured within the Division of Trauma and Injury Prevention of the World Health Organization. He has served as the Chairman of the Trauma Registry and Data Committee for the World Health Organization. In addition, Dr. Coimbra is a Past Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and Past Chairman of the ACS International Injury Care Committee. He is also Past-President of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, which is the premier trauma organization in the world. Dr. Coimbra has more than 560 scientific publications in most clinical and experimental aspects of Trauma, Emergency General Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care related research.

Dr. Kirkpatrick completed his Medical School at the University of Ottawa in 1988 and upon completion of a Surgery Residency and Critical Care Trauma Fellowship at the University of Toronto he joined the University of British Columbia as Assistant Trauma Director at the Vancouver General Hospital.  He subsequently joined the University of Calgary where he is now a Professor of Critical Care Medicine and Surgery.  He has served in both Regular and Reserve positions in the Canadian Forces Medical Services since 1985.  His area of research and interest is focused in Intra-Abdominal sepsis and intra-abdominal hypertension, Trauma Care, the use of ultrasound in the evaluation of trauma patients as well as the treatment and diagnosis of injury and illness in deep space

Salomone Di Saverio is a Consultant Surgeon, performing elective General Surgery Procedures, and Team Leader Consultant in Acute Care-Trauma Surgery. He is currently Clinical Head for Laparoscopy in Trauma Surgery in the Trauma Surgery Unit, and Vice-Chair of the Trauma Surgery Unit, Trauma Center Maggiore Hospital Bologna. He performed more than 2850 major surgical procedures, mainly as first operator, many cases in laparoscopy. He described and published several original or innovative surgical techniques in both open and laparoscopic surgery.
