International experience:
Multiple long-term research stays in the US (5 years at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and Harbor-UCLA in Torrance, California), Japan (8 years at various medical schools: Murayama Medical Center in Musashimurayama City (Tokyo), Chiba University in Chiba, Tokyo Women’s Medical School, Showa University in Tokyo, Sapporo Medical School in Sapporo, Tohoku School of Medicine in Sendai, and others), and in Germany (Ruhr-University in Bochum).
Research and clinical interests:
Expertise in clinical and experimental respiratory research, at both molecular and functional levels. Research interests focused particularly on natural plant pharmacology, molecular mechanisms of respiratory chemosensitivity, carotid body mechanisms, neuropharmacology, central and peripheral regulation of breathing, adaptation to hypoxia, oxidative stress, aging process, and neurodegenerative diseases, neuropsychology.
Research and academic activities:
• Author and editor of numerous original research articles, chapters, books, and proceedings (more than 200 hundred).
• Organizer of international annual medical conferences devoted to experimental and clinical pneumology and to rehabilitation medicine.
• Guest editor of Springer books in the series Advances in Experimental Medicine & Biology, Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology, and the European Journal of Medical Research.
• Associate editor on boards of several international journals.
• Collaboration with multiple academic, research, and clinical institutions across Europe, USA, and Japan.
