About this book series
The investigation of cosmic phenomena is one of mankind’s oldest adventures and at the same time one of the areas where we are presently witnessing the most astounding expansion of knowledge in the natural sciences. The rapid growth of experimental evidence due to, e.g., modern computer technology, satellite-borne observatories and high-tech instrumentation even tends to accelerate this. To keep abreast, scientists collect their information in specialized journals, proceedings of international symposia and tersely written review articles. These sources are hardly accessible to students.
Textbooks at the advanced graduate level have to bridge the gap from introductory texts to original work published for the expert. A&A Library is designed to meet this aim as a series of high-quality textbooks and well-balanced (documented) research monographs for the advanced student. Books published in A&A Library present proven, mature facts and expose differing opinions on open problems and will guide the best students to the "hot" topics of today’s research in astronomy and astrophysics.
The series A&A Library, however, is more. It aims to close the gap between the astronomical sciences and other areas of modern physics. It meets the growing need to critically examine the experimental and theoretical results and recognize both the lasting and the short-lived. Its broad coverage and its careful supervision by the editors make A&A Library a reliable source of information for researchers and students alike. As in any other field of science, teaching and training at the graduate level is invaluable for the advancement of astronomy and astrophysics. Addressing students at a point when they are specializing in a particular discipline, advanced classes are decisive in the quality of the next generation of researchers. A&A Library will provide them with modern textbooks and monographs to meet the most ambitious demands.- Electronic ISSN
