Topical Issue: Branching Dynamics at Mesoscopic Scale 

Branching is a commonly observed and complex behavior in nature in mesoscopic scale (1-100 μm). From cell migration to snowflake formation, from Saffman Taylor instability in Hele-Shaw cell to dendritic growth in alloys solidification, branching dynamics and mechanism have been of long-standing fundamental interests in numerical studies of scientific and engineering significance. From a fundamental science point of view, branching dynamics involve rich and essential nonlinear physics and possible universality between branching structures. Despite the long history research of the topic, it still remains as a challenge to fully understand branching dynamics due to the complexity and universality of pattern formation and selection.
In this topical issue of the European Physical Journal E, we aim at providing a significant overview of the topics of branching dynamics at mesoscopic scale. It will focus on the underlying physics of pattern formation and selection from branching dynamics in different fields in mesoscopic scale, such as snowflake like pattern formation, branching structures and structure stability in phase change, branching behaviors of cells and bacteria, Saffman Taylor instability in Hele-Shaw cell, and so on. Questions as to how the branching behavior is related to possible universality between existing branching structures and how branching dynamics responses to internal properties and external conditions will be highlighted.
The themed issue will contain the following topics, but are not limited to:
(1) Common principle dominating the dynamics and development of branching structures;
(2) Snowflake formation and evolution in solid-liquid system and solid-vapor system;
(3) Branching structures formation and their structure stability in phase change;
(4) Formation of self-assembly branching structures in a nonlinear system;
(5) Saffman Taylor instability in Hele-Shaw cell and branching behaviors in multiphase flow system.
The issue welcomes contributions of the latest original results in the field, as well as review contributions. Following the standards of EPJE each manuscript will be peer reviewed. Manuscripts should be submitted before 31 March 2019 directly to the EPJE Editorial Office at https://articlestatus.edpsciences.org/is/epje. Submissions should be clearly identified as intended for the topical issue “branching dynamics at mesoscopic scale”.
Papers will be published continuously and will appear (as soon as ready) on the journal website. The online version of the topical issue will contain the papers in the order of publication.

Call for papers: Thermal non-equilibrium phenomena in soft matter 

Submissions are invited for a Topical Issue of EPJE dedicated to thermal non-equilibrium phenomena in soft matter. The scope will extend on fundamental studies and applications of soft material under thermal non-equilibrium conditions: theoretical and experimental advances to investigate thermodiffusion in soft matter, novel coupling effects induced by thermal fields, non-equilibrium fluctuations in thermally inhomogeneous fluids, thermodiffusion in porous media, thermal diffusion effects in colloidal suspensions, thermal non-equilibrium phenomena in biology, applications of thermodiffusion in sensing technologies and industrial processes.
The issue will include, but won't be limited to, full peer-reviewed papers from authors presenting their work at the XIIIth International Meeting on Thermodiffusion (IMT) that will take place from September 11th to September 14th, 2018 at Imperial College London. The IMT is a well-established forum for discussion of non-equilibrium transport phenomena. Authors working on these phenomena are invited to submit contributions, regardless if they will attend the IMT.
The submission is open to everyone working in the field. The submission of contributions will open in mid September 2018. We invite interested authors to contact the guest editors before September 2018, providing a tentative title and a short abstract of their contribution. The full manuscripts should be submitted before the deadline directly to the EPJE Editorial Office at https://articlestatus.edpsciences.org/is/epje/.
Submissions should be clearly identified as intended for the Special Issue "Thermal non-equilibrium phenomena in soft matter". Papers will be published continuously and will appear (as soon as accepted) on the journal website. The electronic version of the Special Issue will contain all accepted papers in the order of publication. All submitted papers will be refereed according to the usual high standards of the journal.     EPJ E publishes papers describing advances in the understanding of physical aspects of Soft, Liquid and Living Systems.

    Soft matter is a generic term for a large group of condensed, often heterogeneous systems -- often also called complex fluids -- that display a large response to weak external perturbations and that possess properties governed by slow internal dynamics.

    Flowing matter refers to all systems that can actually flow, from simple to multiphase liquids, from foams to granular matter.

    Living matter concerns the new physics that emerges from novel insights into the properties and behaviours of living systems. Furthermore, it aims at developing new concepts and quantitative approaches for the study of biological phenomena. Approaches from soft matter physics and statistical physics play a key role in this research.

    The journal includes reports of experimental, computational and theoretical studies and appeals to the broad interdisciplinary communities including physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and materials science.

    Tips and Tricks
    Topical Reviews

    Tips and Tricks (T&T) are short peer-reviewed papers that focus on a novel methodological approach that facilitates new science. These papers may describe experimental, computational, or theoretical tips and tricks. Although T&T papers maybe shorter than normal research papers, they should still provide enough detail such that the reader can readily implement the ideas presented. The standards of scientific quality and rigour will be the same as a for regular papers (control experiments, clear descriptions, comparison to previous methods, statistical analysis, quantitative evaluation if appropriate, etc.). T&T can be submitted regularly through the online system, but please mention in the cover letter if your submission is a T&T paper. You may contact the T&T editors, Kari Dalnoki-Veress or James A. Forrest, for more guidance on how to prepare a T&T paper.

    Colloquia describe the development of new areas of research or the impact of new and promising experimental or theoretical methods in the fields that are within the spectrum of topics covered by the respective journals. While not as extensive and complete as reviews in the usual sense, they are intended to suitably introduce new research directions and techniques in their early stages of development, and to a wider audience. There is no explicit constraint regarding the length of such manuscripts, although 20 printed pages would be the most usual length. All invited/submitted manuscripts will undergo the same refereeing procedure as all other contributions submitted to the journal. For invited colloquium papers, authors will receive a honorarium of EUR 400,-- upon publication and colour figures will be free of charge. Colloquium papers are generally solicited by the journal editors. Authors wishing to submit a colloquium paper are advised to contact J.M. Di Meglio.

    Topical Reviews provide a comprehensive and extensive summary of recent research results in a field that is within the spectrum of topics covered by EPJ E and are of current interest to a broader audience. A topical review should aim to summarize the pertinent experimental, theoretical, and computational results obtained by the key research groups working in the field in the past 10 years. Historical reviews of an entire sub-field of physics are discouraged. There is no explicit constraint regarding the length of such manuscripts, although 35 printed pages would be the most usual length. All invited/submitted manuscripts will undergo the same refereeing procedure as all other contributions submitted to the journal. For invited topical review papers, authors will receive a honorarium of EUR 400,-- upon publication and color figures will be free of charge. Topical review papers are generally solicited by the journal editors. Authors wishing to submit a topical review paper are advised to contact the Editorial Office or the Editors-in-Chief.
