Research into, and the understanding of, belowground plant organs lags behind that of leaves, stems, flowers and other usually aboveground parts; therefore, this special issue will focus on roots, rhizomes, tubers and bulbs, and their functional ecology with contributions from different biomes and covering a broad range of topics.
