Extending the reach and use of your content

Springer serves thousands of customers around the world which predominantly comprise academic libraries. While sales to corporate and medical libraries are achieved, typically these involve the same business model and same product as developed for the academic market.

As you can imagine, the needs of these customer segments are quite diverse. For example, a medical or hospital library not only serves their medical professionals and clinicians, but they also have a duty to provide members of the public with access to information. In the corporate environment, information specialists and knowledge managers must support the content requirements of thousands of employees, across multiple locations and departments, each working in their own unique field.

These challenges presented opportunities for Springer to work more closely with existing medical and corporate customers to understand the primary pain points in providing access to scientific literature. Customer consultations and product development workshops resulted in the creation of new platforms and content packages designed to meet the specific needs of these sectors: Springer for Research & Development and Springer for Hospitals and Health.

The platforms have been created to mirror the way in which users in the corporate and medical sectors prefer to access information. Including millions of documents from scientific journals, books, series, protocols and reference works, content has been structured into convenient subject collections that map to specialities relevant for each customer type. For the corporate sector, these include 16 collections that relate specifically to each of Springer’s target sectors (e.g. oil, gas & geosciences; automotive; pharma; engineering, telecommunications etc). For hospitals and health, the collections cover current topics in health sciences across 12 key speciality areas (e.g. biomedicine, neurology, pathology etc). But as well as the different ways in which content is used, so too are the methods for purchasing literature. Corporate and medical users often need access to information for a specific project or timeframe which, when complete, is not required again. Or they might need access to a limited number of books or journals relevant for their fields. Additionally, fluctuations in budget, which might occur throughout the year, require a level of flexibility to enable delivery of information as it is required. To support this, Springer introduced new business models: a deposit account, which lets customers pay a set amount for access to a certain number of articles, and pay per view where articles / content can be purchased on an individual basis. By establishing new ways to access and pay for content in line with user needs, Springer has been able to better serve these sectors which also extends the reach and use of your content.
