Urban Geography and Urban Studies Success in Singapore WCS 2018

The WCS 2018 was very successful with more than 24,000 attendants and great media attention. Springer had a presence there with Publishing Editors Juliana Pitanguy, Loyola D'Silva and Fritz Schmuhl. It was an honor to exhibit at this top event. It was an opportunity to learn from scientists attending the event such as Orna Rosenfeld, Yu Nong Khew, Michele Acuto, Xuemei Bai, Rigitze Hess, Flemming Borreskov, among others.
When attending the event, I could observe that the exchange between science, industry and civil society which is at the background of what we do was taking place there and leading to solutions to urban problems. I have understood that urban studies researchers input a lot of what they do to government to influence policy, but I hadn’t actually observed it taking place and involving other parties such as NGOs and all types of businesses (big, medium and small start-up companies). The number one motivation at WCS was to innovate and lead the example. An important theme during the conference was embracing the future of cities through innovation and collaboration. It had over 130 mayors and city leaders from 128 cities in the world.
The Springer Nature event on Sustainable Cities was very inspiring. It was a workshop setting with different panels and discussions. One of the speakers, Xuemei Bai, Australian National University, pointed out how much development there is in the field of urban studies – a truly flourishing field.  She was in a panel with Michele Acuto, University of Melbourne, and Arron Wood, the Mayor of Melbourne. We were seeing truly co-production, as she pointed out herself, a live interaction between science, practice and policy-making.
With this thought in mind, Springer’s Urban Studies Program aims to publish content that inspires sustainable and innovative initiatives for urban areas in the world. We have a growing presence in urban studies and intend to bring our program to the forefront. We have published more than 40 titles in The Urban Book Series including the successful open access title: Housing Estates in Europe, and in response to growth in the publishing program we have now launched a new series Megacities of the World
