Impact factors of Springer and Palgrave Macmillan journals announced: increased number of journals in JCR

Springer online platform SpringerLink now includes Palgrave Macmillan journals

Heidelberg | New York, 27 June 2016

The 2016 update of the Thomson Reuters Journal Citation Reports® (JCR) lists a total of 1,681 Springer journals among its numbers. This figure includes the Palgrave Macmillan journals which are now hosted on the online platform SpringerLink. Forty of these are newcomers to the JCR and have an impact factor for the first time. A total of 52 percent of these journals increased their impact factor from 2014 to 2015.

The Palgrave Macmillan journals joined SpringerLink in 2016 following the merger of the majority of Macmillan Science and Education and Springer Science Business+Media in 2015, forming the publishing group Springer Nature. The Palgrave Macmillan journals cover topics in the fields of business and economics, humanities and the social sciences. More than half of the 29 Palgrave Macmillan JCR listed journals saw an average increase of 30 percent.

Heinz Weinheimer, Managing Director Springer Research Group, said, “We are happy to announce that we could improve again the impact factors of our portfolio and that we can now offer the highly reputed Palgrave journals via our content platform SpringerLink.”

Springer’s oldest JCR listed journal is Virchows Archiv (The Official Journal of the European Society of Pathology), which has been publishing since 1847.

Springer monitors the impact of social mentions on its journal articles using Altmetric which tracks and analyzes the online activity around scholarly literature. This allows scientists to see where their work is being discussed and/or shared online, thus measuring the impact of their research. The article metrics, consisting of citations and social mentions, can be found on the abstract page of every Springer article. This feature has now been added to Palgrave Macmillan journal articles.
