About this book

This book provides an up-to-date perspective on oral biofilms and dental materials, equipping readers with a sound understanding of their mutual interactions. Experts from across the world comprehensively describe the main strategies that can be followed when designing modern bioactive and biomimetic dental materials, bearing in mind the goal of reducing the occurrence of pathological conditions such as secondary caries and peri-implantitis. The background to the book is the rapid expansion in the use of nanotechnologies and modern techniques to achieve levels of performance of dental materials that were unthinkable even a few years ago. Whereas conventionally dental materials have been regarded as inert, an important paradigm shift is underway: now, these materials are being conceived as bioactive and biomimetic. Modern dental materials can produce a response by interacting positively both with the host and with the biofilm permanently colonizing hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity. These materials increasingly mimic the behavior of the tissues that they are replacing. In documenting the latest knowledge in the field, this book will be of value for both scientists in the fields of nanotechnology, biofilms and dental materials and interested clinicians.

About the editors

Andrei C. Ionescu gained his DDS from the University of Milan, Italy, in 2008 and subsequently completed a PhD in Nanotechnologies at the University of Trieste, his thesis addressing the influence of resin-based dental materials on oral biofilm development. He is currently a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Biomedical, Surgical, and Dental Sciences at the University of Milan. He was a clinical instructor in the Restorative Dentistry and Endodontics Department at IRCSS Galeazzi Institute, Milan for 7 years. Dr. Ionescu’s research interests include oral microbiology, dental materials, and surface characterization. He has especially focused on the study of oral biofilms and their interaction with dental materials and on the synthesis of novel antibacterial materials using nanotechnology. To date he has authored more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Sebastian Hahnel, Prof. Dr. med. dent., is Director of the Department of Prosthodontics and Dental Materials Science at Leipzig University Hospital, Germany. Prior to taking up this position in 2018, he was Adjunct Professor in the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry, Regensburg University Medical Center, Germany. Dr. Hahnel gained his DDS from the University of Regensburg and completed his Habilitation (postdoctoral lecture qualification) with a thesis on the influence of material-specific and environmental factors on the adhesion of microorganisms to dental materials in vitro. He is author of more than 90 original articles in peer-reviewed journals as well as several review articles and book chapters. Dr. Hahnel is an editorial board member for BMC Oral Health and Quintessence International and acts as a reviewer for many other journals.
