Il volume espone, nella prima parte, la teoria delle decisioni in condizioni di incertezza nelle sue linee generali, senza fare riferimento a contesti applicativi specifici. Nella seconda parte vengono presentati i concetti principali della teoria dell'inferenza statistica, inclusa una panoramica delle principali 'logiche' dell'inferenza statistica. L'orientamento dell'autore è esplicitamente di tipo bayesiano, ma vengono analizzate con attenzione anche le principali impostazioni alternative . La terza ed ultima parte è dedicata ai problemi di decisione statistica: oltre ai classici problemi di inferenza post-sperimentale, viene affrontata anche la tematica del disegno ottimale dell'esperimento .
