Heidelberg | New York, 25 March 2021

Book cover: Leadership in Statistics and Data Science Today’s statistics and data science communities are confronting the need for diversity and inclusion toward a vision of stronger research and better social responsibility. This edited collection presents perspectives from some of the strongest thought leaders on diversity, equity, and inclusion in the fields of statistics and data science, with the goal of encouraging the communities toward inclusive and humanistic leadership. Volume editor and award-winning scholar Amanda L. Golbeck poses the question: “How can we make use of humanism, inclusion, and related competencies to help propel our statistics and data science workplaces toward inclusive excellence?”

A statistician and social scientist with a demonstrated passion for inclusive excellence, Dr. Golbeck has invited a diverse array of thought leaders with backgrounds in academia, industry, and government across many sub-disciplines of statistics and data science to contribute their voices to this collection. While they each bring something unique, the volume is unified by their open willingness to navigate the difficult conversations surrounding diversity in leadership.

Leadership in Statistics and Data Science provides both futuristic ideas for promoting opportunities for equitable leadership, and tested approaches that have already been found to make a difference. It speaks to the challenges and opportunities of leading successful research collaborations and making strong connections within research teams. Curated with a vision that leadership takes a myriad of forms, and that diversity has many dimensions, this volume examines the nuances of leadership within a workplace environment and promotes storytelling and other competencies as critical elements of effective leadership. It makes the case for inclusive and humanistic leadership in statistics and data science, where there often remains a dearth of representation among women and certain racial communities.

This book will be of particular value to specialist and non-specialist readers alike, across industry, government, and academia, who are interested in thought-provoking and action-oriented discussion about how members of the statistics and data science communities can strive for inclusive excellence. Titled and non-titled leaders will benefit from the tools offered within to contribute inclusive excellence in workplace climate, environment, and culture.
