Archives of Women's Mental Health - Call for Papers: Topical Collection on Sex Differences and Gender Influence in Psychosis

Guest edited by Judith Usall Rodie and Susana Ochoa Güerre (Institut de Recerca Sant Joan de Déu, Barcelona)

In the last three decades, sex differences and socially constructed gender influences in psychosis have gathered increasing interest in the scientific community, resulting in vast amounts of research. The literature in this field has not only focused on clinical issues, but also on areas related to social and cognitive functioning. The ways in which psychosis is expressed by women and men are likely modulated by genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors.  This may be the reason why women and men may experience the disorder differently in some aspects such as age at start, functionality and response of pharmacological and psychological treatments.

Despite the interest in this field, many questions remain regarding the influence of sex and gender on psychosis.

We are looking for papers investigating sex differences in the risk of psychosis, symptoms, social functioning, prognosis, response to pharmacological and psychological treatment, and cognition, among others. We are also interested in neuroimaging and genetic studies exploring these differences.

In terms of the role of gender in psychosis, we are interested in papers assessing the associations between environmental exposures (e.g., childhood adversity, substance use, urbanicity, migration, birth season, obstetric complications, and other comorbidities) with the risk and prognosis of psychosis.

Submission Deadline: 31 October 2023
