Topic:

Quantification and characterization of uncertainty are two key features of modern science-based predictions. When applied to water resources, these tasks must be able to handle many degrees of freedom, complexity of physical and (bio)chemical processes, sparsity and/or poor quality of data, and medium- and long-term variability of natural/anthropic stresses imposed on a system. These features make accurate estimates of the quantities of interest virtually impossible. Novel theoretical and computational approaches are needed to deal with complex flow/transport models with large number of unknown parameters. Our Special Issue targets contributions related to novel theoretical and computational methods for uncertainty quantification with a special focus on machine learning and data integration opportunities in hydrology, metamodeling strategies, model inversion and their applications. Data analyses and parametric sensitivity analyses of highdimensional models are also in the scope.
