Trees - Call for papers: Urban Trees Collection

Trees – Structure and Function invites contributions for a topical collection entitled Urban Trees.  

More than 50% of the global population of trees live in urban areas. This percentage is expected to reach 68% by 2050. On the one hand, these populations are vulnerable to the effects of climate change because the urban environment exacerbates the effects of extreme climate events. On the other hand, trees are considered a reliable tool for the mitigation and adaptation to climate change, because they provide environmental services such as carbon assimilation, temperature reduction, increasing thermal comfort, reduction of storm-water runoff, and increasing the perception of well-being to name but a few.

Urban trees are at the core of Nature-Based Solutions for ecosystems restoration in the cities and Geoengineering for mitigation and adaptation of cities to climate change. However, we are just beginning to understand how trees develop and how they function in the urban environment and, consequently, how they can contribute to making cities more livable.

This collection is an opportunity for an ongoing discussion that combines soft- and hard-science in an attempt to promote well-being in world cities. It intends to compile articles on different aspects of the science of urban trees, such as how their structure and physiology change in urban areas, how they provide environmental services, and how they relate to citizens living in urban areas.

Manuscripts should be submitted through the regular submission site (this opens in a new tab) of the journal. Submitted manuscripts will be subject to standard peer review and evaluation. Accepted manuscripts will be published online immediately after acceptance. Finally, publishing a manuscript is free of charge unless it is Open Access (this opens in a new tab).
