Discover Data - Meet the Editor-in-Chief for Discover Data

New Content ItemProfessor Nitesh V. Chawla, Editor-in-Chief

"It is an exciting and timely opportunity to envision a journal that is at the intersection of data and society. As the applications of data science / machine learning / artificial intelligence become more pervasive and ubiquitous, it becomes increasingly important to look at all aspects from data collection to applications, especially from a social contract perspective. To truly reap the benefits of innovations stemming from data science, there will also have to be a framework that demonstrates alignment with societal needs and grand challenge problems, algorithmic and data responsibility, and knowledge of and compliance with best practices, coupled with a human-driven value system of sound judgment. We envision this journal to be a home for publications that speak to this framework, inspire new data-driven solutions to society's most pressing problems."

Nitesh V. Chawla is the Frank M. Freimann Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Notre Dame and the Founding Director of the Lucy Family Institute for Data and Society.

Professor Chawla is an expert in artificial intelligence, data science, and network science, and is motivated by the question of how  technology innovations can advance the common good through interdisciplinary research. He is the recipient of multiple awards for research including best paper nominations and awards, teaching innovation including outstanding teacher awards, a National Academy of Engineers New Faculty Fellowship, 2015 IEEE CIS Outstanding Early Career Award, the IBM Watson Faculty Award, the IBM Big Data and Analytics Faculty Award, Rodney F. Ganey Faculty Community-Based Research Award, and the 1st Source Bank Technology Commercialization Award. He is a Fellow of IEEE.

True to the interdisciplinary focus of Professor Chawla's research and interest in societal impact, he is also a Fellow at the Kellogg Institute for International Studies; the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies; the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies; the Pulte Institute for Global Development; and the Reilly Center for Science, Technology, and Values. He is a co-founder of Aunalytics, a data science software and cloud computing company.
