Aims and scope

Discover Mechanical Engineering is part of the Discover journal series committed to providing a streamlined submission process, rapid review and publication, and a high level of author service at every stage. It is a multi-disciplinary, open access, community-focussed journal publishing research from across all fields relevant to mechanical engineering.

Discover Mechanical Engineering welcomes experimental, theoretical, analytical, modelling, and applied approaches that advance the study and practice of mechanical engineering. The journal aims to serve a wide range of communities, from mechanical engineers to researchers working on areas of other scientific disciplines that intersect with mechanical engineering concepts, or that have applications in mechanical engineering. The journal particularly welcomes research that contributes to achieving the global aims of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, such as Goal 9: to Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.

Topics

Discover Mechanical Engineering covers topics including (but not limited to) the following primary areas mechanical engineering:

  • Solids and Structures (linear and nonlinear solid mechanics, structural mechanics, computational mechanics, composite materials, experimental mechanics, vibrations, fracture and damage mechanics, contact mechanics, dynamics of structures, tribology, biomechanics);
  • Fluids and Energy (climatization, ventilation, indoor air quality, heat transfer, computational fluid dynamics, efficient combustion systems, combined systems of heat and electricity production, renewable energies, fuel cells, energetic and environmental performance for sustainable development);
  • Materials and Manufacturing (materials and their behaviour in service, namely wear, creep, fatigue and fracture, joining of materials by welding, plastic deformation and adhesives, foundry technology, plastic forming processes and their numerical simulation, machining, coatings, additive manufacturing, biotechnology, nanotechnology);
  • Automation and Machine Design (industrial automatisms, control and instrumentation, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, industrial informatics, robotics and numerical control, mechatronics, vision and intelligent systems, machine design in various industrial fields such as automotive, aerospace, motion control).

Content Types

Discover Mechanical Engineering welcomes full-length Research articles as well as Brief Communications of empirical findings, Reviews, Perspectives, Comments, Case Studies, Registered Reports, and Data Notes that describe work of relevance to mechanical engineering. The journal also publishes guest-edited Topical Collections of relevance to all aspects of mechanical engineering. For more information, please follow up with our journal publishing contact.
