Frontiers of Urban and Rural Planning - Special Issue on Creating Healthy Urban Spaces at the Nexus of Urban and Health Sciences

In the evolving realm of global urban development, the interaction of urban planning and health sciences emerges as a critical frontier for both research and policy-making. The resurgence of the "Healthy Cities" concept following the pandemic marks a pivotal shift towards incorporating population and planetary health into the urban planning process. This special issue, entitled "Creating Healthy Urban Spaces at the Nexus of Urban and Health Sciences" aims to advance this vision by offering a platform for interdisciplinary dialogue and innovation. Cities pose unique challenges and opportunities for promoting public health, requiring innovative strategies to weave health considerations into the fabric of urban planning and management practices. With a focus on creating inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable urban environments, this collection aims to highlight the integral role of health in urban planning and the transformative potential of integrated approaches. Through a series of insightful commentary articles and case studies, contributors will dissect the complex interplay among urban spaces, urban living, and public health, offering evidence-based strategies and policy recommendations.

This special issue will explore how urban environments come into play in shaping people’s health, as well as how urban design and policies can be leveraged to craft health-promoting environments. Topics will range from the examination of the relationships between urban spaces and population health to the evaluation of health impacts in urban planning, providing a comprehensive overview of the current landscape and cutting-edge frontiers in creating healthy urban spaces.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Reviews for healthy urban spaces: theory, policy & technology
  • Climate change, environmental risks, and urban health
  • Impact of urban spaces on physical, mental, and social health
  • Urban spaces, mobility, and health equity
  • Health-promoting interventions/policy-making from the spatial lens
