Human-Centric Intelligent Systems - Guidelines for Special Issues of Human-Centric Intelligent Systems (HCIN)
The objectives of Human-Centric Intelligent Systems (HCIN) for submission in respect of a Special Issue are (a) academically excellence, (b) relevance to HCIN, and (c) innovation of topic. Proposals should be submitted to the attention of:

HCIN welcomes any Special Issue proposals falling within its aims and scope. Editors-in-Chief, in consultation with the Editorial Board, will review the submitted proposal and may present the decisions of (a) acceptance, (b) revisions, or (c) rejection of the proposal. If the proposal is approved after evaluation, the Call-for-Papers proposal will be put on the journal website.
Guidelines for submitting a proposal
The proposal should be submitted to Editors-in-Chief as a word document with the Call for Papers embedded or attached. The content should clearly indicates key factors as following:
1. The name and contact details of the Guest Editor(s)
2. The title of the Special Issue
3. Abstract or summary of the proposed topic
4. Necessity for organizing this Special Issue
5. Explanation of the suitability of the topic for the journal
6. Open date & Close date of the special issue or a proposed schedule for each stage of the process including timelines and deadlines for receiving, reviewing and revising manuscripts into final publishable form
Academic background of the proposed Guest Editor(s) (maximum within 650 word characters in total)
8.Strategies for promoting the call for papers (including details of any conference or workshop with which the Special Issue might be associated).
Special Issues’ on-line submission and reviewing process
Once the Special Issue is agreed upon and open for submissions, the Guest Editor(s) will be in charge of inviting and selecting papers for the Special Issue. Generally, each Special Issue contain approximately 5 - 10 papers with no limits on the length of each manuscript.
All papers must be submitted through the journals on-line submission system (Editorial Manager) which can be found at: Editorial Manager® (this opens in a new tab).
Guest Editor(s) and invited authors should follow Springer Nature’s and HCIN Editorial Policies carefully before they submit their paper. This information can be found at Editorial Policies. (this opens in a new tab)
Reviewers should follow Springer Nature’s Peer-Review Policy, Process and Guidance (this opens in a new tab).
The Special Issue may publish submissions from the Guest Editor(s), but the submission ratio from Guest Editor(s) might not exceed 20% The Guest Editor(s) must not be involved in any decisions about his or her own papers. Peer review of any such submission should be handled by Editor Board who has no conflict of interest.Then Editors-in-Chief shall make final decision.
Special Issue reviewing processes must proceed in accordance with the principles of transparency and objectivity, which is achieved through adherence to the established practice of blind peer reviews. The manuscripts submitted to the Special Issue also follow the single-blind reviewing. A regular review process for each submission consists of two stages: initial check and peer review.
Initial check: all the submitted manuscripts will be initially checked by the Guest Editor(s). At this stage, a decision of “Reject without review” would be made for the submissions which do not meet the scope of the Journal and the topic of the Special Issue, or/and the publication standards of HCIN.
After initial check, the following process should be adhered to:
All submissions to the Special Issue must be reviewed based on single blind peer-review process conducted in Editorial Manager. Qualified reviewers (no less than two independent experts in the same or related areas) will be invited for peer review by the Guest Editor(s). When a submission has at least two useable reports, the Guest Editor(s) can return it to authors for revision (major or minor), or make recommendations to the Editors-in-Chief regarding whether to accept the manuscript for publication or reject it. Then Editors-in-Chief shall make final decision. If the Editors-in-Chief deem it necessary to invite reviewers for further evaluation, the Editors-in-Chief will directly invite new reviewers to review the manuscript.
Guest Editor(s) and reviewers should have no conflict of interest with authors and/or research. Otherwise, it would affect the objectivity of the peer review process.
If Guest Editor(s) or reviewers inappropriately request citations of their own published papers or papers from journals (mandatory citations), they can be withdrawn and replaced during the peer review.
If a paper is not well-matched with the Special Issue but probably can be accepted as a regular paper by journal, it should be transferred to Editors-in-Chief to make the decision.
The Guest Editor(s) will be invited to submit an editorial that provides a substantive and critical overview of the Special Issue, or/and is of publication standards in its own right. The editorial will be submitted to the Editors-in-Chief for review.
