Architectural Intelligence - Call for Papers: How the Utilization of Building Interior and Micro-urban Space Promotes the Health of the Elderly with Digital Technology

Call for Papers: How the utilization of building interior and micro-urban space promotes the health of the elderly with digital technology (this opens in a new tab)

General Information

People are living longer all over the world. According to the data sourced from the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of people aged 60 or over outnumbered the children aged under 5 in 2020. It is projected that 1 in 6 people will be aged 60 or over worldwide by 2030. It is common to see the increased longevity and improved health at older ages in many cities of the world. In this context, aging issues has become a research hotspot of the Nature journals.

Within the built environment, the utilization of interior space in the buildings and the activation of small-scale urban public space (parks, green space in front of houses, or idle land) play a vitally important role in maintaining the health of the elderly. Closer to human behavior, these spaces and environments affect not only the mobility of elderly people but also their physical and mental well-being. The full utilization of these spaces is indispensable from the emergence and application of new digital technology, such as artificial intelligence technology, big data technology and information exchange equipment, as well as the activity studies of the elderly in the space, such as via human factors and ergonomics. With the development of new quantitative research methodologies, scholars have begun to explore the association between the utilization of interior building space/urban micro-urban space and the health of elderly people.

This special issue is purposed to find out how the innovative utilization and activation of spaces can link the health of the elderly with digital technologies and new quantitative research methodologies, which contributes to the practice of intelligent elderly care with the following topics:

  • How to study the everyday activities of elderly people through spatiotemporal behavior and big data, along with the Hybrid Motion Capture
  • How to study the light, temperature, color and the signage system for construction of an aging-friendly space with digital methodologies;
  • How the application of smart technologies, such as positioning, obstacle avoidance, information exchange, human-computer interaction and multi-sensory interaction and module integration intended for the elderly, can be integrated into the practice of spatial design for the better utilization of space;
  • XR technology (such as VR and AR):how to study the activities, perceptions and emotions of the elderly in spaces by applying new XR digital methodologies;
  • How digital technology can be applied to improve our understanding of human factors and ergonomics, and to change the way the utilization of space by the elderly is evaluated;
  • Digital technology in teaching: How can virtual reality contribute to teaching the course of accessibility design and universal design?
