Architectural Intelligence - Call for Papers: Integration of Design and Fabrication

Call for Papers: Integration of Design and Fabrication (this opens in a new tab)

General Information

The integration of design and fabrication has become a crucial and increasingly relevant topic, driven by advancements in digital technologies in both the design and manufacturing realms. This theme encompasses a wide array of aspects, including material selection, design methodologies, computational techniques, construction approaches, maintenance considerations, environmental impact, and sustainability concerns, all of which are associated with architectural and structural design across various applications.

Under the umbrella of the 'Integration of Design and Fabrication', in conjunction with the theme of 2023 International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS) symposium, the focus lies in addressing challenges and opportunities by incorporating digital design workflows and leveraging new manufacturing technologies for architectural form and spatial structures. The paramount goal is to showcase the design form-finding and production through research projects centered around the integration of design and fabrication.

We welcome papers with topics including advanced design methods, cutting-edge fabrication techniques, and smart materials, with a focus on striking a balance between creative ideas and technical proficiency. The advent of new modeling software, advanced fabrication tools, and innovative materials has given rise to highly intricate and architecturally stunning designs. From a production standpoint, building designs have evolved from mass production to sophisticated just-in-time-shape-and-place production, effectively turning the construction of advanced building structures into an industrial design process.

Despite the significant achievements made in this field, the gap between concepts, ideas and technical implementation has widened. To bridge this gap, many professionals and researchers have undertaken the mission to exchange research and applications related to advanced design and manufacturing. The focus is on various stages of the design and manufacturing process, striving to introduce a new future of building that involves interdisciplinary cutting-edge techniques and developments in the built environment.

Papers are solicited with the topics of interest including, but not limited to:

  • Structural performance-based design and advanced manufacturing
  • Numerical methods for geometry, form-finding, optimization and application
  • Cutting-edge techniques and smart materials for the built environment
  • Robotic fabrication, additive manufacturing for customized design
