Editor-in-Chief Professor Michael Shanahan is a professor of sociology and leader of the Social Genomics Lab at the University of Zürich, where he has also served as director of the Jacobs Center for Productive Youth Development. His primary research and teaching interests focus on inequalities in health, particularly social correlates of gene expression patterns. Professor Shanahan received his PhD in sociology from the University of Minnesota (1991) and then held an NICHD post-doctoral fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has also held professorships at Pennsylvania State University, the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford (as Hewlett Fellow), and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Professor Shanahan has published in a wide range of journals, and his work has been cited over 14,000 times. He is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Behavioral Medicine (2011) and the Sociological Research Association (2012).
