Description
This Special Issue contributes to the exchange of ideas and knowledge on the best of what has recently been archived in the field of fire safety engineering and plan the future of the field.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Evacuation of buildings and human behaviour in case of fire 
  • Explosions
  • Firefighting
  • Fire chemistry, physics and combustion
  • Fire investigation
  • Fire in industrial buildings (petrochemical, etc.)
  • Fire reaction
  • Fire risk assessment
  • Fire safety of structures
  • Fire safety regulations, standardization and construction trends
  • Fire safety systems and installations (fire detection, fire suppression, smoke control, fire signage and lightning, fire alarm)
  • Mechanical and thermal properties of materials at high temperatures
  • Research and certification of building products.

Submission guidelines
All papers must be prepared in accordance with the Instructions for Authors at:
https://www.springer.com/journal/44150/submission-guidelines (this opens in a new tab).  Authors should submit via the online submission site (this opens in a new tab) and select article type "Developments on Fire Safety of Buildings".

Submitted papers should present original, unpublished work, relevant to one of the topics of the Special Issue. All papers will be evaluated on the basis of relevance, significance of contribution, technical quality, scholarship, and quality of presentation by at least two reviewers. It is the policy of the journal that no submission, or substantially overlapping submission, be published or be under review at another journal or conference at any time during the review process.

Please note that the authors of selected papers presented at IFireSS 2023 are invited to submit an extended version of their contributions by taking into consideration both the reviewers’ comments on their conference paper, and the feedback received during presentation at the conference. It is worth clarifying that the extended version is expected to contain a substantial scientific contribution, e.g., in the form of new algorithms, experiments or qualitative/quantitative comparisons, and that neither verbatim transfer of large parts of the conference paper nor reproduction of already published figures will be tolerated. The extended versions of IFireSS 2023 papers will undergo the standard, rigorous journal review process and be accepted only if well-suited to the topic of this special issue/topical collection and meeting the scientific level of the journal. Final decisions on all papers are made by the Editors-in-Chief.

Meet the Guest Editors:

New Content ItemGeorge V. Hadjisophocleous holds the Industrial Research Chair in Fire Safety Engineering at Carleton University, where he moved in January 2001. He leads a team of 20 researchers working in a number of areas including Fire Risk Analysis, Smoke Movement, Design Fires and Fire Modelling. Prior to moving to Carleton University Prof. Hadjisophocleous was a Senior Research Officer at the Fire Risk Management Program of the National Research Council (NRC) of Canada and Group Leader of the Fire Risk Assessment Group. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of New Brunswick and he is the author of a large number of publications in the areas of fire research, fire risk assessment, performance-based codes and CFD modelling. Professor Hadjisophocleous is a Fellow of SFPE, member of NFPA, IAFSS and CIB W14.

New Content ItemAli Nadjai is currently the Director of Fire Safety Engineering Research Technology Centre at Ulster University. He is one of the UK’s leading researchers and academics in Fire Structural & Safety Engineering and the performance of buildings in fire situations. He has achieved international recognition in the development of design codes and regulations and has played a leading role at Ulster in developing the research base in the subject area as well as contributing significantly to a suite of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the discipline. He was educated at Heriot Watt and The University of Sheffield. He has published over 160 papers and has strong of supervision of doctoral students, with 25 successful completions to date. He is a Chartered/ Member of many corporate bodies (FIFE, MIStruct.E, IAFSS, ISO, NSIA expert and NI Gov Expert in Building Fire Safety) including the Fire Engineering Research Network and the EPSRC Peer Review College.

New Content ItemAbdelHamid Bouchair is currently the Head of Civil Engineering Department of Polytech Clemont (Clermont Auvergne INP). His teaching and research activities are in the field of steel, timber and composite structures. The topics concern the behavior of steel-timber elements and connections in fire and normal situations. The research approaches are based on the combination of numerical modeling and testing with regard to the analytical design formulas. He published more than 80 papers and supervised more than 20 doctoral students. He is member of various networks such as Carnot MECD Institute.
