Architecture, Structures and Construction - Meet the Editors-in-Chief and Associate Editors

Editors-in-Chief

Prof. Paulo J. S. Cruz
New Content ItemPaulo J. S. Cruz is Civil Engineer and Full Professor of Construction and Technology at the School of Architecture of the University of Minho, Guimarães, Portugal. President of the International Association of Structures and Architecture (2016 – 2022). President of the Design Institute of Guimarães. President of the School of Architecture of the University of Minho (2004 – 2011).

Prof. Cruz bridges the gap between architecture and structural engineering, promoting the efficient use of the traditional materials and exploring innovative technological, constructional and structural solutions, namely those related with additive manufacturing.

Prof. João Paulo C. Rodrigues
New Content ItemJoão Paulo C. Rodrigues is currently Associate Professor with Habilitation at the University of Coimbra in Portugal, and Visiting Full Professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil.

His research interests lie in the areas of structural and building engineering in general and fire safety engineering. He has coordinated National and European research projects, including materials and structures testing laboratory reequipping projects. Prof. Rodrigues has actively participated in international scientific committees on structures and materials subject to high temperatures. He started his academic career in the area of building construction and then moved to structures, with some architecture as well. This allows him to have a transversal view and has convinced him that civil engineering and architecture are two inseparable parts of construction. In his research and teaching, he promotes the interaction between these areas for a sustainable development of construction.

Associate Editors

Prof. Wan-Ki Chow
New Content ItemWan-Ki Chow is currently Emeritus Professor of Architectural Science and Fire Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong.

Prof. Chow retired in November 2019 as Chair Professor of Architectural Science and Fire Engineering (1998-2019) and Director of Research Centre for Fire Engineering (2000-2019) at the Department of Building Services Engineering, PolyU, after serving PolyU for 38 years since 1981, serving as Head of Department from 2008 to 2016. His research areas are on fire models, fire suppression systems, smoke management systems, fire safety of green constructions, building energy use and built environment. He has contributed to provide a comfortable, safe and healthy environment for sustainable buildings with tall height, large space volume and located in deep underground through research, university teaching, and assisting the government to approve performance-based fire safety design in new big construction projects. Prof. Chow was elected to be a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences in 2012; and appointed as a Justice of the Peace by the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2013.

Prof. Ornella Iuorio
New Content ItemOrnella Iuorio is an Associate Professor of Architectural Engineering at Politecnico di Milano, Italy, and Visiting Professor at the University of Leeds, UK.

Formerly, Prof. Iuorio was Full Professor and Chair of “Architecture and Structures” at the University of Leeds, where she also acted as Director of the “Cities, Infrastructures and Energy Research group” which comprises over 50 members in the fields of architecture, building physics, project management and circular economy. She is an international expert in the field of cold-formed steel systems, prefab, retrofit, and circular economy. She has been recognized by the Guardian in 2022 as one the “Top 50 Women in Engineering: Invertors & Innovators” for developing innovative lightweight and resilient construction systems with high structural performance and low embodied carbon, widely adopted in mass-manufacturing and in seismic areas. With a portfolio of research projects over £6M funded by Innovate UK, EPSRC, ESRC, and British Academy, Prof. Iuorio is contributing to the transformation of the construction sector by developing prefabrication, optimization and digital fabrication to deliver more sustainable new constructions and retrofitting the built environment. Before joining Leeds, Prof. Iuorio developed her carrier at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Naples Federico II (IT). Her research has been published in more than 100 journal and conference papers.

Dr. Faidra Oikonomopoulou
New Content ItemFaidra Oikonomopoulou is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Architectural Engineering, Delft University of Technology, Netherlands.

With an academic background in both Architecture and Building Technology, her expertise lies at the interface of structural design, architectural design and material engineering and is driven by applicability and sustainability. Her research focuses on structural glass and particularly on innovative structural applications of cast glass components, on glass recycling and circularity, and on the design of novel glass loadbearing structures and components for the built environment. Dr. Oikonomopoulou is an international expert in the field of cast glass. She has been involved in the R&D, mechanical validation and construction of several high profile real-world cast glass applications such as Crystal Houses (NL), The Glass Vault (UK), Qaammat Pavilion (GL), Mirage (Apple Park, USA), for which she has co-received multiple awards including the Innovation Award by the Society of Façade Engineers (UK, 2016), the Glass Innovation Award (NL, 2017) and the personal Talent met Toekomst Bouwprijs (NL, 2017).  Prototypes of her research work have been exhibited at several prestigious international fairs and exhibitions. Dr. Oikonomopoulou has received several grants, awards and nominations for her research into glass and has given multiple invited talks at universities, companies and institutions in Europe and the USA.
