On April 14th 2021, an International Symposium, organized on-line by the European Academy of Sciences will be dedicated to the increasing roles of micro- and nano-technologies for medicine and life sciences. The main organizer is Prof. Daniel Scherman, Head of Medicine & Life Sciences Division at EurASc and General-DIrector of the Foundation for Rare Diseases.
After a general presentation of the Horizon Europe FP9 Program by the EC Director-General of Research and Innovation, the increasing role of micro- and nanotechnologies will be illustrated by several examples : nanoparticles for drug delivery and as a tool to escape cancer multidrug resistance, nano-sized recombinant viruses for gene therapy, nano-engines such as the CRSPR-Cas9 which is in the way to revolutionize precision medicine by allowing precise genome editing. In addition, micrometer sized cells, which have been genetically modified by using nanometric recombinant viruses, have proved successful for numerous rare disorders, such as those of the immune system, or beta-thalassemia. Such gene/cell therapies also represent one of the most exciting recent breakthroughs in cancer. Strikingly, the very same nanolipid particles which had been originally developed to treat rare disease by using antisense oligonucleotides or RNA-interfering genetic drugs, have been successfully used for the recent mRNA vaccines against COVID-19 and other viruses. Pioneers of drug delivery and cell/gene therapy will describe these dramatic advances and will also detail the different vaccine strategies and epidemiological concepts concerning the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to the 2021 Symposium, EurASc currently collaborates with other institutions for the organization of international workshops and conferences. Every year a large symposium devoted to topics of global interest is organized in different cities, all around Europe. For example, the 2019 EurASc Symposium was organized at the “Universidad Politécnica” of Madrid on Artificial Intelligence by Prof A.Gomez-Perez, Vice-Rector and EurASc member. Every year the Academy awards prestigious international Scientific Awards: The “Blaise Pascal Medals” to outstanding scientists belonging to each of the nine EurASc Divisions, and one “Leonardo da Vinci Great Medal” for outstanding lifelong achievements.
A noteworthy illustration of international cooperation between EurASc and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) is illustrated by the Strategic Workshop initiated by the two academies, in the scope of UN Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development. The “Frontier Forum on Marine Sciences and Technologies” was held on Oct. 20-21, 2020 in Shanghai and on-line by Zoom with Prof. Paul Treguer as co-Chair, EurASc member, University of Western Brittany, France.
The European Academy of Sciences carries an important mission to promote excellence in science and technology and their essential roles in fostering social and economic development and progress. One of the aims of the Academy is to strengthen European science and establish scientific cooperation with other countries, by utilizing the expertise of the most distinguished scholars and engineers. About 600 renowned scientists are members of EurASc, including several Nobel Prize winners, coming from more than 40 countries from all-over Europe, and open to non-European scientists, with the aim of creating links within European countries and beyond.
The Academy has received the acknowledgments of the former EC Commissioner for Research Dr. Carlos Moedas during his mandate for its contributions to strengthening research in Europe and its sustained efforts in addressing future challenges.
