Meet the Editor-in-Chief for Discover Energy

New Content ItemProfessor George R. Tynan, Editor-in-Chief
“Discover Energy aims to create a peer-reviewed forum where the energy science, technology, business and economics, policy, and systems communities can gather to discuss, debate, identify and evaluate pathways that accelerate the decarbonization of the world’s energy systems. With a rigorous and streamlined review process, the journal seeks to provide a forum for the rapid evaluation and dissemination of solutions to this critical challenge facing the world today.”

Dr. George Tynan is Distinguished Professor of Engineering Science and Department Chair of the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at the University of California San Diego.  His primary teaching and research interests focus on the challenge of climate change mitigation via the deep decarbonization of the global energy system that supports the global human population.  His courses introduce engineering students to the critical links between human quality of life, energy access, and energy demand growth; today’s primary and secondary energy sources and conversion technologies and resulting energy services that these provide; fundamentals of climate change and Earth’s carbon balance; learning, technology diffusion and market uptake; and implications of these subjects for climate change mitigation.  He is the founding co-Director of the UC San Diego Deep Decarbonization Initiative, has played a key role in building research expertise across a range of disciplines at UCSD, and has published extensively on the physics and technology of controlled nuclear fusion with over 240 peer-reviewed publications that have been cited over 9000 times in the literature. Professor Tynan received his Ph.D. in 1991 from the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering at UCLA and joined the UCSD faculty in July 1999. In 2010 he was named a Fellow of the APS in recognition for his contributions to fusion plasma physics research.
