Aims and Scope:

Computing technologies have been adapted in cities to address a diverse range of social, managerial, and environmental problems impacting urban planning and development (Geertman et al, 2019). The COVID-19 pandemic has raised an essential debate, and become a profound global test of whether smart technologies and digital innovations in cities ultimately contribute to improve the well-being of citizens.  We believe future cities will be shaped by collaborative, multidisciplinary and inclusive urban transformations and therefore, the transformational potential of technological innovation will eventually empower both urban decision-makers and citizens to make informed choices about their urban futures (Geertman et al, 2021).

In view of these challenges and opportunities, this Special Issue of the journal Computational Urban Science invites original papers that present the state-of-the-art research in theory, practice and methods for harnessing the potential of computational planning and management for future cities. We hope this volume of scholarly works will provide an important contribution to the body of knowledge interfacing data, technology, communities and smart cities as we strive to plan more healthy, liveable, sustainable and resilient cities of the future.

Selected contributors of the 17th International Conference on CUPUM (Computational Urban Planning and Urban Management) will be contacted by the conference organizers and special issue editors for possible inclusion in the special issue based on the outcomes of a thorough review process.

Submitted manuscripts could cover but not limited to the following themes:

  • Future Cities
  • Planning support systems
  • Geodesign
  • Urban Informatics
  • Artificial intelligence in urban planning and management
  • City modelling and simulation
  • Digital Twins
  • Smart places & cities
  • Big data analytics
  • Digitisation and Urban Planning Cultures
