Special Issue Objectives:

The aim of Journal of Global Business and Competitiveness (JGBC) special issue is to assemble high-quality papers that deepen and enhance understanding of circular and digital economy practices in SMEs and their management to achieve international competitiveness. Understanding the competitiveness of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the face of changing market environment has been a topic of great interest to business management researchers.  The special issue of JGBC aims to attract world-leading academicians to ponder the central issue of “the competitiveness of SMEs in the era of circular and digital economy”. The special issue seeks to explore the central theme and aims to explore diverse aspects of this, including challenges, drivers, enablers, business models, strategies, decision-making, and policy framework.

Suggested Topics for Submission:

Some of the suggested topics (but not limited to) are as follows:

  • New sources for competitive advantages of SMEs and their linkages with circular and digital economy (Wade et al., 2022)
  • Frameworks for measuring competitiveness of SMEs in context to circular and digital economy
  • Competitive priorities of SMEs in circular and digital economy
  • Barriers and facilitators of circular and digital economy practices in SMEs 
  • Interconnection of competitive strategy with different areas of circular and digital economy in SMEs
  • Practical actions or strategy to improve competitiveness through circular economy

  • Role of Innovation or knowledge management in circular and digital economy for improving competitiveness
  • SMEs and collaborations for improving competitiveness in circular and digital economy (e.g., Mesquita & Lazzarini, 2008)
  • Digitalisation and circular economy for improving competitiveness in SMEs
  • Applications of industry 4.0 technologies in the adoption of circular economy practices in SMEs
  • Factors enabling SMEs transition towards circular and digital economy-based business models
  • Challenges and benefits of circular and digital economy practices in SMEs and their impact on competitiveness of clusters and corporates (Momaya, 2016)
  • Export competitiveness of SMEs in advanced countries (incl. greener products), sustenance and scale-up (Simon, 2016)
  • Decision making for SMEs competitiveness from circular and digital economy perspective

Anticipated Date of Publication: 31 May 2023

Submission Details:

Articles submitted to the journal should be original contributions, preferably based on empirical research, and should not be under consideration for any other publication at the same time. Authors submitting articles should follow the submission guidelines of International Journal of Global Business and Competitiveness (JGBC) for preparing the manuscripts. Main manuscript should be written concisely (less than 5000 words, incl. references); supporting material including appendices should be uploaded in a supplementary file. All papers will undergo double-blind review following the journal’s normal review process and criteria.
