Safety in Extreme Environments - Call for Papers: Special Issue on “Hydrogen Safety in Challenging Operating Conditions”

There has been a rising demand for hydrogen which can be considered as a great substitute for fossil fuels. Hydrogen is the most available element and can be obtained from various sources. However, the production, transmission and application of hydrogen are associated with some safety issues, which have to be evaluated for various potential hazards to ensure safe operations. Due to the unique properties of hydrogen which are significantly different compared to hydrocarbon fuels, hydrogen safety has been a topic of considerable interest in recent years. This special issue focuses on risk analysis and accident modelling in different process operations of the hydrogen life-cycle from production to application. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Review of the risk assessment tools for predicting and preventing process accidents in the hydrogen industry
  • Approaches to managing human factors in hydrogen production, transmission and application
  • Recent advancement of experimental techniques and measurement diagnostics for risk and reliability analysis of hydrogen handling
  • Emerging trends in computational simulations and modelling software for hydrogen accidents’ consequence modelling (e.g. fire, explosion, thermal radiation)
  • Sensing and monitoring advancement toward hydrogen safety
  • Machine learning applications and data-driven models in risk assessment and management of hydrogen process
  • Principle and approaches for the safety assessment of hydrogen vehicles
  • Latest technologies for safe storage of hydrogen

Timeline
The deadline for manuscript submission is 30th September 2021.

Submission Guidelines
Original submissions of high-quality contributions are expected. Please submit your manuscript as an ‘Original Research Article’ via https://www.springer.com/42797 (this opens in a new tab) and select the special issue “Hydrogen Safety in Challenging Operating Conditions” in the ‘Additional Information’ section during the submission process.
The format of all submissions should follow the specifications described in “Guide for Authors” of the Journal of Safety in Extreme Environments shown in https://www.springer.com/journal/42797/submission-guidelines (this opens in a new tab). Papers will be refereed according to the procedures and standards of the journal.
Each paper will undergo a thorough evaluation by at least two reviewers. The authors will have some time to incorporate the comments of the reviewers and submit a revised version of their papers, which will be evaluated again by the reviewers to make a final decision.
