I am also consultant in other icipe project entitled "Promoting smallholder access to fungal biopesticides through Public Private Partnerships in East Africa – PROSAFE. My PhD title was “An autodissemination strategy using entomopathogenic fungi and kairomonal attractants for managing thrips on grain legumes”. During my PhD tenure, I developed an “attract and infect” strategies for the application of biopesticides. The fungal isolate Metarhizium anisopliae ICIPE 69 marketed as Real Metarhizium is combined with the commercial thrips kairomonal attractant LUREM-TR and applied in autoinoculation device or spot spray. We reconfirmed the compatibility between Lurem TR and the entomopathogen Metarhizium anisopliae which prompted the research for spatial and temporal separation between the lure and the fungus. Furthermore, we implemented “spot spray” application of M. anisopliae combination with kairomones. We discovered that spot spray application was more effective than cover spray and cost benefit analysis showed higher rates of return. I have also identified an alternative thrips attractant which are compatible with M. anisopliae and demonstrated its efficacy under field conditions.
