Special Issue: Fresh Ideas in plant health: the latest research from young plant pathologists

The Journal of Plant Pathology (JPP) is pleased to announce a special issue dedicated to graduate students and postdocs who are 24 months from graduation (e.g. a January 2023 graduation means submissions to the SI are allowed until December 2024).

The SI will accept papers on any topic of plant pathology and plant-associated microbes as long as the first author is a graduate student or has graduated in the last year.

The corresponding author is required to indicate their status in the cover letter of the manuscript.
Additionally, including a letter from the student's tutor would be greatly appreciated.

There are four significant benefits that will come to those who will submit a paper for this SI dedicated to students:

•  Review Time: we are committed to ensuring a fast-reviewing time

•  Peer Review: One of the reviewers will be truly a peer of the first author, i.e., a student or a first-year postdoc.

•  Open Access: Every six months, the authors of two notable submissions, already accepted for publication, will be offered 66% of the cost necessary to "switch" the published status of the paper to Open Access format.

•  Editorial Board: Students with accepted papers will be automatically invited to join the JPP student Editorial Board.

We are grateful to the Italian Society of Plant Pathology (SIPaV) which is sponsoring the four substantial yearly gifts for deserving students who will publish in the student SI and to Prof. Sabrina Sarrocco (Pisa, Italy) who will be the dedicated Handling Editor for the student SI.

Student reviewers will be appointed to a newly created JPP Student Editorial Board, where they will receive full credit for their reviews.

We believe this innovative project will accelerate the process of involvement of students in the publishing process and will be an invaluable addition to the field of Plant Pathology while providing a solid experience that students can include in their curricula.

For this reason, we are asking all faculty members to submit the nomination of one meritorious student (2nd year and older, unless they have a Master's degree from their research group.

Meritorious nominees will be placed on the Student Editorial Board and may be asked to serve as reviewers, starting in the late Spring of 2023.

Please send your nominations to matteog@berkeley.edu (this opens in a new tab). Remember to write "JPP student editorial board nomination" in the subject line.

We are excited to receive your submissions and nominations for this special issue of the Journal of Plant Pathology.

Together, we can help promote the involvement of graduate students and postdocs in the publishing process and provide them with a valuable experience in the field of Plant Pathology.
