Accepted Article Formats

The idea is to bring innovative formats of elaboration of ideas while complying to APA norms. There are in principle no particular limitations in the length of the manuscripts or in the number of figures and tables. However, if the submissions should exceed the 10.000 words (excl. references) or 10 images, the authors are invited to negotiate the size with the editors. Manuscript should be prepared with Arial 11, captions under the images and references in APA style. Any material (excerpts, images, transcripts, quotations, etc.) should be provided both in English and in the original language).

Human Arenas publishes articles in English, yet is in principle open to other languages if and only if this can enrich the scientific quality of the publication. In case of submissions in languages other than English, authors are required to contact the editors and are anyway required to provide the English translation. The possibility to publish in languages other than English is anyway limited to the journal’s actual capabilities.The journal is organized in sub-sections, each one with its particular format. Not all the sessions are necessarily present in every issues and special sessions can last across more issues.

The journal encourages innovative forms of academic writing in one of the following possible format/sections:

  • Regular article or invited articles
  • Target article with 2 or more commentaries (this can correspond to a special issue section)
  • Continuing discussion: commentaries and answers can develop over different issues of the journal
  • Topic special session (more article related together as a special issue)
  • Tandem articles (2 articles in couple according to different possible formats:
    • Junior/senior: an article proposed by a young researcher with an expert in the field
    • Research tandems: 2 scholars from different countries that write an article together on the same topic, in which one works as an informant for her own context to the other
    • Dialogue article: a socratic/galilean dialogue between 2 scholars (can be two different perspectives in psychology or can be two different disciplines)
    • What’s in the kitchen: 2-3 of the best presentations per year in the “kitchen-seminars” (a cycle of international research workshops hold every Wednesday at the Centre for Cultural Psychology in Aalborg) can become articles, or a particularly interesting discussion in the k-seminar can be turned into article by a small group of participants
    • Old melody in a new song: contemporary replications of “historical” studies in psychology or reinterpretations of old studies in a new key (e.g. Re-reading the findings of an old study by the light of new concepts)
    • Coffee breaks: a small excerpt with a short comment to a single page-quotation from a copyright free historical work (eg. an excerpt by Wundt with a single page comment, proposed by the author of one article/section.
    • Book reviews: we accept traditional format book reviews, yet we strongly encourage innovative formats as for instance interviews with the author.
